“Batten down the hatches” takes on new meaning with an innovative patent developed by BrakeWater Technology.

This two-part system - a rigid frame and hatch - is designed to keep water from coming through windows and doors when floodwaters rise.

How does it work? The new system begins with a custom rigid frame around windows and doors that is permanently attached to the building. When a major storm is approaching or other threat of flooding, homeowners very simply attach a hatch to the frame and lock it in place. Putting the hatch on and taking it off is easy and only takes seconds.

What parts of a home should be protected? Covering all basement windows and any windows and doors that are between ground level and four feet is recommended. Half door and half-window options are available. “Superstorm Sandy in 2012 raised flood waters up to four feet in some areas,” noted Bracci. “Who’s to say that’s not going to happen again?”

How much will it cost?  The average cost for easy to use, permanent flood-resistant hatches for a structure is $750 per window and $1400 per half-door. (Installation costs vary) “Now, that’s affordable.” says Bracci. “It costs less -- and is better than -- flood insurance.”

What’s the story? BrakeWater started in 2013 by the Bracci family after Hurricane Sandy devastated their home and the homes of thousands of people in The Rockaways area of Long Island, New York. It was heartbreaking for them to see loved ones left homeless with their possessions -- including treasured photographs and family heirlooms -- gone forever.

The Braccis resolved to find way to protect the community from experiencing this type of ordeal. As Tim Bracci walked the littered beaches of the Rockaways, he reflected on his days with the Navy, and how hatches were used to keep ships watertight. With his sons Jonathan and Cory and his nephew Michael, they began to design prototypes that would protect homes in a similar manner. It took about eight months to develop.

Who makes it?  Bracci Fence and Iron Works has been serving the five burroughs since 1954 and the business model has always been to tackle the difficult jobs and get them done right. Bracci Fence and Iron Works is the first authorized dealer of BrakeWater Technology.

BrakeWater fabricates the frames and has several integrity checkpoints. A master mechanic inspects each unit and deems it suitable for use. Whether the crew from BrakeWater install it, or the customer’s own contractor, BrakeWater is always there to advise and help.
